SciencoFAST Launches Slide-In Marine Sanitation Device
SciencoFAST unveils the MSD Slide-In, a rail-mounted sanitation device designed for tight vessel spaces and easier servicing.
A New Approach to Onboard Sewage Treatment
SciencoFAST, a marine wastewater treatment specialist, has introduced a new Marine Sanitation Device (MSD) called the Slide-In, built to address the perennial problem of fitting sanitation equipment into cramped machinery spaces. According to a report by The Maritime Executive, the manufacturer says the unit was engineered specifically for vessels where installation footprint and maintenance access are constrained.
Rail-Mounted Design for Easier Access
The defining feature of the Slide-In is its rail-mounted mounting system. Rather than requiring vertical lifting or partial disassembly to reach service components — as is typical with conventional MSDs — the unit can be slid directly into an existing hull tank and pulled back out again, or lowered into an existing tank or void space for inspection and upkeep. SciencoFAST says this cuts down on both installation complexity and the labor hours needed for routine maintenance.
Bob Millerbaugh, Executive Vice President of Marine Sales at SciencoFAST, said the product was developed to tackle one of the most persistent headaches in marine sanitation: equipment rooms with little room to spare and poor access for servicing. He noted that the system suits both newbuild installations and retrofit projects where operators want to repurpose existing tank space rather than carve out new compartments.
Built on Established Treatment Technology
The Slide-In is based on SciencoFAST’s existing wastewater treatment platform, which the company says already meets major sanitation standards referenced in the maritime industry, including USCG, IMO, MARPOL, MEPC, and ABS requirements. The manufacturer lists several practical benefits tied to the new configuration: a rail-mounted slide-in system, improved service and inspection access, reduced installation labor, a compact footprint suited to tight mechanical spaces, and the ability to make use of tanks that are already built into the hull.
SciencoFAST positions the Slide-In as particularly relevant for passenger vessels, ferries, research vessels, and workboats — vessel types where compact equipment rooms are common — as well as for retrofit projects and custom designs where space for sanitation equipment is at a premium.
What It Means for Operators and Surveyors
For ship owners and technical managers, a sanitation system that can be withdrawn from its housing without major disassembly has practical implications beyond convenience. MSDs are subject to periodic inspection and servicing to remain compliant with MARPOL Annex IV discharge requirements, and units mounted in awkward or inaccessible spaces are often the ones that get deferred maintenance simply because reaching them is difficult. A slide-out design that shortens downtime for inspection or repair could make it easier for crews to keep up with scheduled servicing rather than pushing it off until the next yard period.
This also has relevance for retrofit projects on older vessels, where hull tank layouts were never designed around modern MSD equipment. A system that can drop into an existing tank rather than requiring new structural work potentially lowers the cost and disruption of upgrading sanitation systems to meet current standards — a consideration that matters for owners weighing retrofit against replacement when planning compliance upgrades.
A Continuing Compliance Consideration
While SciencoFAST frames the Slide-In primarily as a serviceability improvement, the underlying compliance drivers remain unchanged: vessels must still demonstrate that their sanitation systems meet applicable discharge standards under MARPOL Annex IV and flag or class society requirements. Easier physical access to the unit does not replace the need for proper documentation, testing, and survey verification that the equipment is functioning as intended.
As with any new equipment introduction, operators considering the Slide-In — or any retrofit MSD — should ensure that installation and ongoing performance are independently verified during class and flag surveys, so that improved accessibility translates into genuine, sustained compliance rather than just a more convenient piece of hardware sitting in the engine room.
