Saildrone Fires Missiles From Sail-Powered Surveyor USV

Unmanned Surface Vessel Gains Strike Capability

According to a report by The Maritime Executive, autonomous vessel developer Saildrone has carried out a live-fire missile test from its Surveyor sail-powered uncrewed surface vessel (USV) during the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2026 exercise. The trial adds to a growing tally of unmanned-vessel weapons demonstrations being run by the US Navy.

The test involved firing two Joint Air-to-Ground Missiles (JAGM) from a modified Surveyor platform fitted with a twin-pack launcher developed with Lockheed Martin. Lockheed invested $50 million in Saildrone last year as part of a partnership aimed at broadening the mission profile of its USV fleet, and the JAGM launcher was the first publicly disclosed product of that collaboration.

About the JAGM System

JAGM is designed as a successor to the widely used Hellfire missile, retaining anti-armor lethality while adding new guidance options. The version fitted to the Surveyor has a range of roughly 18 kilometers, fire-and-forget targeting, and a navalized seeker variant with near-infrared capability and extended reach. Given that JAGM production is expected to scale into the tens of thousands of units across US military branches, it is positioned as a low-friction option for arming a range of platforms, including uncrewed ones.

During the RIMPAC trial, the Surveyor received targeting data from a separate vessel to direct its launch, and the exercise was run under the sponsorship of the Navy’s Fleet Experimentation Program. Saildrone and Lockheed Martin have described it as the first missile launch conducted from a USV, carried out in coordination with a carrier strike group.

A Larger Platform on the Horizon

Saildrone is now developing a considerably larger USV, the Spectre, aimed at the Navy’s Medium Unmanned Surface Vessel (MUSV) program, which has recently been restructured. At 170 feet and roughly 300 tonnes, the Spectre is designed to carry two 40-foot containerized payloads and will be offered in both sail-powered and motor-powered configurations — the former suited to quiet, long-endurance anti-submarine work, the latter to a lower-profile strike role.

Lockheed Martin’s Paul Lemmo, Vice President of Sensors, Effectors and Mission Systems, said the companies intend to keep investing in new capabilities ahead of operational need, aiming to accelerate and de-risk deployment of defense technologies considered urgent.

What It Means for the Maritime Sector

While Saildrone’s Surveyor and Spectre are naval assets rather than commercial vessels, their rapid evolution says something broader about where uncrewed maritime technology is heading. Platforms originally built for long-endurance ocean data collection and surveying are now being adapted into armed, mission-flexible systems capable of operating for extended periods with minimal crew oversight. For the commercial and inspection side of the industry, this trend underscores how autonomous surface technology is maturing quickly — sensor packages, remote data links, and long-duration hull and propulsion reliability are all being stress-tested in demanding naval trials.

As unmanned platforms proliferate in both military and commercial contexts, questions around vessel condition monitoring, structural integrity, and equipment certification will only grow more relevant. Owners and operators exploring uncrewed or semi-autonomous vessel technology for survey, monitoring, or logistics work should note that the reliability lessons emerging from high-intensity military testing — sensor calibration, hull durability under sustained operations, and remote system integration — will likely filter down into commercial standards and inspection protocols over time. Independent condition and equipment surveys remain essential as these new vessel types, whether armed or unarmed, enter wider service and require verification against evolving classification and safety expectations.

For now, the Surveyor’s missile test is primarily a defense milestone, but it is a reminder that the boundary between research-oriented USVs and operationally capable platforms is closing fast — a shift worth watching for anyone involved in vessel certification, technical management, or maritime risk assessment.
