Rolls-Royce Wins Methanol-Ready Certification for MTU Engines
DNV certifies Rolls-Royce's mtu Series 4000 engines as methanol-ready, paving the way for future dual-fuel retrofits.
DNV Confirms Methanol Retrofit Concept for MTU Series 4000
Rolls-Royce has been awarded a Methanol Readiness Certificate from classification society DNV for its mtu Series 4000 marine engines, according to a report by Maritime Executive. The certificate validates the engineering concept behind converting newly built Rolls-Royce propulsion systems to run on methanol as a dual-fuel option at a later date, rather than requiring shipowners to commit to methanol capability at the point of newbuild delivery.
Lukas Köhler, Senior Vice President Global Marine & Mining at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, said the uncertainty surrounding future CO2 regulation is pushing operators to seek more flexibility in propulsion and fuel choices. The certification, he said, gives customers confidence that their vessels can transition to methanol operation once the fuel becomes widely available in sufficient supply.
From Test Bench to Certification
The milestone builds on work Rolls-Royce began in 2025, when it ran the first high-speed marine engine powered solely by methanol on a test bench in Friedrichshafen, Germany. Since then, the company says it has logged more than 5,000 hours of operating data using methanol in both single-fuel and dual-fuel configurations across several test benches. That accumulated testing forms the technical basis for the retrofit concept now endorsed by DNV.
Köhler pointed to green methanol as a fuel with particular relevance for offshore support vessels, ferries and mega yachts, describing the certificate as another step along the company’s broader methanol development roadmap.
Emissions Case for Methanol
According to the source material, burning green methanol produces markedly lower nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions compared with diesel. On a well-to-wake basis — accounting for emissions from production through to combustion — green methanol also carries a substantially smaller carbon footprint than conventional fossil fuels.
The methanol certification sits alongside other fuel-diversification work at Rolls-Royce. In 2021 the company approved its core mtu engine series for use with Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and other sustainable fuels meeting the DIN EN 15940 standard. More recently, in partnership with German e-fuel producer INERATEC, Rolls-Royce completed laboratory testing this spring of the synthetic renewable fuel branded MATERA e-Diesel.
What It Means for Owners and Managers
For shipowners and technical managers, a methanol-ready certification is primarily a hedge against regulatory and fuel-availability uncertainty rather than an immediate operational change. It allows a vessel ordered today with mtu Series 4000 engines to be built to a known retrofit pathway, deferring the capital and infrastructure decisions tied to methanol bunkering until the fuel supply chain matures. That said, certification of the engine concept is only one piece of the puzzle — actual conversion will still depend on fuel storage arrangements, bunkering infrastructure, and crew training, none of which are addressed in this announcement.
From an inspection and survey standpoint, dual-fuel retrofit programs raise practical questions that owners should start considering now. Methanol’s different handling, storage, and toxicity characteristics compared with diesel or HVO will require updated tank condition assessments, cargo and fuel system surveys, and revised safety documentation once retrofits move from concept to installation. Superintendents evaluating newbuild specifications with methanol-ready notations should also confirm exactly what scope of future conversion work — engine, fuel supply system, or both — is covered by a class society’s readiness certificate, since the term can mean different things depending on the technology and classification society involved.
As alternative-fuel adoption accelerates across the industry, certifications like this one are likely to become a more common feature of newbuild specifications, giving owners optionality without locking them into a single fuel pathway before the necessary bunkering and regulatory framework is in place.
