A serious accident unfolded on the pier at Mumbai Port on the evening of Sunday, August 30, when a cargo lift involving two truck cranes went wrong, injuring two crane operators and setting off a dockside fire. According to a report by The Maritime Executive, local police attributed the accident to an unstable lift that caused one of the mobile cranes to topple over.
The operation involved the Barbados-flagged bulker Vienna, a 52,224 dwt vessel that is Chinese-owned and had arrived at Mumbai from China several days earlier. The ship was alongside for cargo operations when the incident occurred.
How the Accident Unfolded
Two truck cranes were working together to hoist a load of roughly 140 metric tons. Investigators believe one of the cargo straps securing the load either slipped or failed outright, throwing the lift off balance. As the load shifted, one of the trucks lost stability, and photographs from the scene reportedly show the crane’s cab launched into the air as the rig tipped.
The boom then came down onto the bulker, and the two cranes collided with each other. Authorities believe the friction generated by that collision ignited a fire on the dock. Two crane operators were hurt in the incident — one was seen down on the ground, while the other had to be helped away by colleagues. There were also reports of burn injuries linked to the blaze.
Response and Aftermath
The port’s fire brigade managed to extinguish the flames, though cargo handling at the terminal was halted for a period while the situation was brought under control. Both injured workers were taken to hospital for treatment. At the time of reporting, it remained unclear how much damage, if any, the Vienna sustained from the falling boom or the fire.
Mumbai Port police indicated they intend to examine the safety protocols that were in place during the lift, including whether proper procedures were followed or breached in the run-up to the accident.

Heavy-lift operations involving shore or mobile cranes remain one of the higher-risk activities during port calls, and this incident is a reminder of how quickly a routine cargo lift can escalate into a multi-hazard event — structural failure, fire, and personnel injury all at once. For ship owners and managers, the immediate operational question is whether the vessel itself sustained hull, deck, or fitting damage from the falling boom that could affect seaworthiness or require repair before departure. Given that the extent of damage to the Vienna is still unconfirmed, a thorough condition survey covering the deck area where the boom made contact, along with an assessment of any secondary heat or fire damage near the impact zone, would be a prudent step before the vessel resumes normal operations or the next voyage.
The incident also underscores the importance of verifying rigging and lifting gear — including cargo straps and slings — before heavy lifts, particularly when third-party shore cranes rather than ship’s gear are handling the load. Charterers and technical superintendents relying on terminal equipment for cargo operations have limited direct control over crane maintenance and rigging practices, which makes independent verification through cargo surveys and load monitoring during port calls all the more valuable. As Mumbai Port authorities review whether safety protocols were breached, the case may prompt terminals and operators elsewhere to reassess load-strap inspection routines and communication procedures between multiple cranes working a single lift, especially for loads in the 100-ton-plus range where the margin for error narrows considerably.
Until the investigation concludes, owners with vessels scheduled to call at the same berth, or any facility using similar dual-crane lifting arrangements, may want to request updated safety documentation and confirmation that lifting gear has been inspected and certified before cargo operations resume.
