MSC Launches New Far East Route via Port Everglades

MSC Reroutes Asia-U.S. East Coast Service Through Port Everglades
Port Everglades has regained a direct link to Asia after Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) launched its inaugural call under the restructured Empire Service on July 17. According to a report by The Maritime Executive, based on a press release from Port Everglades, the move is part of MSC’s effort to strengthen schedule reliability across its Asia-to-U.S. East Coast network.
Under the revised routing, the Empire Service drops its previous Florida calls at Jacksonville and Miami in favor of Norfolk, Virginia, and Port Everglades. The rotation covers Shanghai and Ningbo in China, Busan in South Korea, and Rodman in Panama, with Port Everglades serving as the last U.S. stop before vessels return to Shanghai. Port Everglades Terminal, LLC (PET) will handle the calls — the same operator that previously managed the port’s now-discontinued MSC Santana Service, its last direct Far East connection.
Larger Vessels, Bigger Cargo Volumes
Port Everglades CEO and Port Director Joseph Morris said MSC’s decision to include the port reflects the payoff of infrastructure investments aimed at improving operational efficiency. He noted that Empire Service vessels are expected to carry up to roughly 8,800 TEU, making them among the largest ships to call at the port and helping accelerate cargo movement to market.
The addition comes as Port Everglades continues to build out a broader container network. The port currently operates 26 cargo services, most oriented toward North-South trade with the Caribbean and Latin America, which helped drive a record 1.167 million TEUs handled in its last fiscal year. To support further growth, the port is upgrading its container gantry cranes and has outlined more than $3.8 billion in capital projects planned over the next 20 years.
What It Means for Owners and Operators
For ship managers and charterers moving cargo on the Asia-U.S. East Coast trade, the shift away from Jacksonville and Miami toward Norfolk and Port Everglades signals a consolidation of East Coast port calls around terminals capable of handling larger tonnage efficiently. As carriers deploy bigger ships to fewer, better-equipped ports, the pressure on terminal infrastructure, draft availability, and berth scheduling only grows. Vessels in the 8,800 TEU class require adequate channel depth and turning basins, and any bottleneck in cargo handling, crane readiness, or berth congestion can quickly cascade into schedule disruptions across the wider network.
This is also a reminder for operators of the practical value of independent verification at transshipment and discharge points. As larger vessels concentrate at fewer East Coast gateways, accurate draft surveys become more important for confirming loaded quantities and avoiding disputes over cargo discrepancies, particularly when container or bulk cargo volumes are consolidated through a smaller number of high-throughput terminals. Terminal and vessel readiness — including condition surveys ahead of berthing larger tonnage — can help operators avoid costly delays as trade patterns shift toward bigger ships calling at fewer U.S. ports.
A Broader Trend in East Coast Port Strategy
The rerouting reflects a wider pattern among major carriers reassessing U.S. East Coast port networks to match vessel size, congestion levels, and reliability needs. For Port Everglades, regaining a direct Far East connection strengthens its competitive position relative to other Florida and Southeast ports, while for MSC, the change is framed as a reliability improvement rather than a capacity expansion in itself.
Whether the shift delivers the intended service stability will depend on how smoothly PET and Port Everglades absorb the larger vessels and increased throughput. Owners, managers, and charterers routing cargo through the port should factor in the operational adjustments — from crane capacity to berth scheduling — that typically accompany a jump to vessels of this size class.
