According to a report by The Maritime Executive, the 740-foot Great Lakes bulk carrier Algoma Equinox ran aground in Ontario’s St. Clair River on July 21, drawing crowds of onlookers and heavy social media attention before being refloated the following afternoon. The incident is a reminder that even routine departures from grain terminals can turn into extended groundings when local conditions and channel depth are misjudged.

The vessel, operated by Canada’s Algoma Central and in service since 2013, had just loaded grain at Cargill’s Sarnia terminal and was departing the north slip around 3:00 p.m. when it ran into a shallow stretch of the river and became lodged. At roughly 39,400 dwt, the Equinox is a familiar sight on the Great Lakes trade, and groundings of this kind reportedly occur a handful of times each year along the busy Great Lakes and St. Lawrence corridor.

Possible Causes Under Review

Speaking to local outlets, the Sarnia Harbor operator suggested the grounding may have resulted from the vessel navigating too close to the shallow area, though he also noted that harbor officials were examining whether wind and an approaching storm played a role in pushing the ship off course during departure. No definitive cause had been confirmed at the time of reporting.

Freeing the Vessel

Initial attempts to free the ship involved two tugs, but responders determined the stern was firmly stuck. The crew then worked to lighten the stern by transferring ballast water forward, while officials considered calling in additional tugs from Windsor or other points along the river. Two separate refloating attempts were made on July 22 before the vessel was finally freed around 2:30 p.m. local time, with two tugs assisting alongside the ship’s own propulsion.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley told local media that the grounding had effectively become a tourist attraction, with residents flocking to the riverbank and the event dominating local social media discussion throughout the incident.

No Pollution or Hull Damage Reported

The Canadian Coast Guard carried out a survey following the refloating and reported no signs of pollution or damage to the hull. The Algoma Equinox subsequently got back underway, continuing its voyage with its grain cargo bound for Baie-Comeau, Quebec.

What It Means for Owners and Operators

While this grounding ended without pollution or apparent structural damage, the sequence of events underscores why prompt, independent verification matters after any grounding, however brief. A vessel that sits aground overnight, shifts ballast to relieve pressure on its stern, and is worked free with multiple tugs has been subjected to loading conditions well outside normal operating parameters, even if visible damage is absent.
