According to a report by The Maritime Executive, U.S. Central Command has confirmed the event took place, saying the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) had malfunctioned more than a day before it was picked up while conducting surveillance work tied to ongoing regional operations.

A CENTCOM spokesperson told NewsNation that the device was an older model and did not carry classified sonar, radar, or other sensitive equipment. Based on its hull markings and general design, the drone appears to be an Anduril Dive-LD, a type used by specialized U.S. Navy units. Iranian broadcaster PressTV subsequently published close-up video of the vehicle’s sensors, panels, fasteners, and other components, effectively allowing outside observers to identify the model through open-source analysis.
