ClassNK Issues Revised Fire Safety Guidance for Container Carriers
Classification society ClassNK has published Edition 2.0 of its ‘Guidelines for Additional Fire-fighting Measures for Container Carrier,’ updating standards first introduced in April 2023. According to a report by The Maritime Executive, the revised guidelines set out criteria for voluntary fire-fighting measures that go beyond the baseline requirements found in international maritime conventions.
The guidelines are aimed at giving shipowners and operators a structured way to evaluate and implement enhanced fire safety systems on container ships, with the option of earning class notations that can be shown to charterers, insurers, and other external stakeholders as proof of compliance.
Why the Update Was Needed
ClassNK says the revision responds to the growing variety of cargo types and stowage arrangements now seen aboard container carriers, a trend that has increased pressure for fire safety measures beyond what current mandatory rules cover. The society developed Edition 2.0 using feedback gathered from shipowners and shipbuilders, ongoing discussions at the IMO, and real-world operational experience gathered since the first edition entered use.
What Has Changed
Among the notable revisions in Edition 2.0:
- New provisions call for fire hydrants to be installed on lashing bridges, allowing crews to respond more quickly to fires in stacked container areas.
- The guidelines now address video monitoring systems intended to support early fire detection across weather deck cargo zones.
- Equipment specifications and quantities have been adjusted to better reflect actual operating conditions and cost considerations. In one example, the number of required weather-deck cameras was cut from eight to two, while the guidelines also clarified how portable infrared thermographic cameras should be used during firefighting operations and routine fire patrols.
ClassNK stated that it intends to keep refining this guidance and its associated certification services as part of a broader push to improve safety across maritime transport.
What This Means for Owners and Managers
For shipowners and technical managers, the revised guidelines offer a useful benchmark for assessing whether existing fire protection arrangements on container tonnage remain fit for purpose given how cargo mixes and stowage practices have evolved. The reduction in required camera counts, paired with clearer guidance on infrared thermal imaging use, suggests ClassNK is trying to balance safety ambition against the practical cost and maintenance burden operators face — a point worth noting for owners weighing retrofit decisions.
The emphasis on lashing bridge hydrants and weather deck monitoring also has direct relevance for pre-purchase and condition surveys. Surveyors assessing a container ship’s fire safety posture, or verifying compliance with voluntary notations, will want to confirm whether hydrant coverage, detection cameras, and thermal imaging equipment actually match current specifications rather than those in force when the vessel was built or last surveyed. As fire safety notations become more common in the container sector, buyers and charterers relying on survey reports should expect greater scrutiny of these systems, since a notation earned under an earlier edition of the guidelines may not reflect the equipment standards now considered adequate.
More broadly, the update is a reminder that voluntary class notations are a moving target rather than a fixed certificate. Owners planning newbuild specifications, or considering upgrades to older tonnage, should check which edition of the guidelines a vessel’s existing notation is based on before assuming it meets current expectations. Independent condition surveys remain a practical way to verify that fire-fighting arrangements — hydrants, detection systems, and portable equipment alike — are actually installed, functional, and consistent with the latest guidance, rather than relying solely on paperwork issued years earlier.
