ClassNK Updates Alternative Fuel Guidelines for Hydrogen, Methanol

ClassNK Revises Safety Guidance for Alternative-Fueled Ships
Classification society ClassNK has published an updated version of its ‘Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels’ (Edition 3.1), tightening safety requirements for vessels powered by methanol, ethanol, and hydrogen. According to a report by The Maritime Executive, based on a ClassNK press release, the revision brings the society’s guidance into closer alignment with international rulemaking while filling gaps that current IMO instruments do not yet address.
Hydrogen Rules Aligned With IMO Circular
The most substantial change appears in Part D, which covers hydrogen-fueled ships. ClassNK has folded in the IMO’s Interim Guidelines for the Safety of Ships Using Hydrogen as Fuel (MSC.1/Circ.1701), issued earlier this year, effectively carrying out what the society describes as a full-scale revision of that section. ClassNK notes it took part in the discussions that shaped the IMO document as a member of the Japanese delegation to IMO Sub-Committee CCC 11.
Beyond simply mirroring the IMO text, ClassNK has added its own hydrogen leak frequency table as a new appendix to Part D. This table was derived using a Bayesian statistical method, the same approach the society previously applied to estimate ammonia leak frequencies. The intent is to give shipyards, designers, and owners a ready reference for the safety assessments that flag administrations require before approving alternative-fueled newbuilds, rather than leaving each party to develop bespoke risk figures from scratch.
New Structural Standards for Methanol and Ethanol Tanks
In Part A, covering methanol- and ethanol-fueled vessels, ClassNK has introduced structural strength requirements specifically for fuel tanks carrying these fuels. The society states that this area is not addressed in the corresponding IMO guidance (MSC.1/Circ.1621), and that the new standard draws on ClassNK’s own accumulated experience reviewing designs for such ships. The aim is to make tank design assessments more consistent and efficient for parties working on methanol and ethanol newbuild projects.
Why the Guidelines Exist
ClassNK originally compiled its alternative fuels guidelines to consolidate safety requirements across methanol, ethanol, LPG, ammonia, and hydrogen — fuels widely seen as leading options for cutting shipping’s greenhouse gas emissions. The guidelines set out equipment, control system, and safety device requirements intended to limit risks to crews, ships, and the environment posed by these fuels’ distinct hazard profiles, such as flammability, toxicity, and material compatibility issues that differ markedly from conventional bunkers.
What This Means for Owners and Managers
For owners and technical managers already committed to methanol or ammonia dual-fuel newbuilds, or evaluating hydrogen as a longer-term option, this update is a reminder that classification societies are actively building out the technical detail that IMO’s higher-level interim guidelines leave open. IMO circulars tend to set broad safety objectives; class societies like ClassNK are the ones translating those objectives into concrete leak-frequency data, tank strength criteria, and design checklists that shipyards can actually apply. Owners contracting hydrogen or methanol vessels should confirm with their yard and class surveyor which edition of the guidelines is being applied to the design, since leak-frequency assumptions and tank strength margins can materially affect fuel system layout, bunkering arrangements, and eventual survey and inspection regimes once the vessel is in service. As more alternative-fueled tonnage enters the fleet, condition and pre-purchase surveyors will increasingly need familiarity with these fuel-specific structural and safety provisions, since a hydrogen or methanol vessel’s fuel tank integrity and leak-detection systems will become as central to a survey scope as engine room and cargo hold checks are today.
Accessing the Guidelines
ClassNK has said the updated guidelines are available to registered users through the My Page portal on its website. The society describes its role as a third-party certification body continuing to support the industry’s environmental transition through standards development, certification, and information sharing.
