Tracking data from Pole Star Global indicates that the two ships had been anchored side by side for several days before the casualty. At around 0530 UTC on September 11, KMax Emperor appears to have left its anchor position and closed the roughly one-kilometer gap toward True Mariner, reaching speeds of up to four knots before striking the other vessel. Following the collision, True Mariner drifted westward before re-anchoring a short distance away, while KMax Emperor also returned to anchor nearby.
Damage and Rescue Operation
KMax Emperor took the brunt of the impact, suffering heavy structural damage to her port quarter. The vessel was reported trimmed by the stern and listing slightly to port, with bystander video showing a large hole torn into the hull and two life rafts deployed at the stern. The ship was described as riding noticeably low in the water.
The Indian Coast Guard confirmed it launched a rescue effort shortly after the collision, safely evacuating 21 crew members from KMax Emperor. Three crew stayed aboard to assist with ongoing response work. Alongside the rescue, the Coast Guard mobilized pollution-control assets and coordinated with other agencies to manage any environmental fallout from the damaged vessel.
