Austal USA has confirmed that its floating dry dock at the company’s San Diego waterfront repair facility is now fully certified and operational. According to a report by The Maritime Executive, the dry dock forms the core of Austal USA’s Repair and Services business line and has been built to handle small surface combatants and vessels of comparable size.

Austal USA President Gene Miller said the dry dock materially strengthens the company’s position as a full-service repair provider for the Navy and other clients on the West Coast, noting that demand for dry dock services in the region continues to grow.

Technical Specifications

The facility has a lifting capacity of 9,000 light tons and measures 531 feet (162 meters) in length and 154 feet (47 meters) in width, with a wingwall width of 13.12 feet (4.0 meters). Its maximum draft is 36 feet (11 meters), and the onboard cranes offer a combined lifting capacity of 16 metric tons — figures that place it firmly in the category of a mid-size docking facility suited to frigates, littoral combat ships, and similarly sized commercial or government vessels.

Partners Behind the Certification

Austal USA credited several partners for helping bring the dry dock to full certification. R.E. Staite Engineering Inc. carried out dredging along with offshore and inshore construction work, while Chula Vista Electric managed the shore power installation. The company also worked with PAE Industrial Operations Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) C980 and Heger Dry Dock, whose input was described as essential to completing the certification process.
