A New Installation Option for Ballast Water Treatment

Alfa Laval has introduced PureBallast 3 Ultra Skid, a factory-assembled version of its PureBallast 3 Ultra ballast water management system, unveiled at SMM 2026. According to a report by The Maritime Executive, the new configuration was developed in direct response to customer requests for a more compact, faster-to-install alternative to the standard system layout.

Why a Skid Design

Rather than requiring separate components to be fitted and connected onboard, the skid arrives as a single prefabricated module with piping already installed, tested, and ready for connection. Alfa Laval says this cuts down on shipyard engineering work and shortens the time vessels spend in installation or retrofit periods. The company points to growing pressure on shipyards to standardize processes and reduce turnaround time as the driver behind the new option.

Tobias Döscher, Head of Global Sales & Customer Support for Alfa Laval PureBallast, said the company’s approach has been to keep adapting its offering based on customer feedback about ease of installation, operation, and maintenance. He noted that the skid version lets customers pick whichever configuration best matches their vessel and yard requirements while retaining the same treatment performance and compliance backing as the standard system.

Technology and Compliance

The skid uses the same chemical-free treatment process as the standard PureBallast 3 Ultra: an automated inline system pairing filtration with enhanced UV disinfection, effective across fresh, brackish, and marine waters, including waters with low clarity. The system is type approved by both the IMO and the U.S. Coast Guard, and is built to handle all salinity ranges. Alfa Laval says the reactor design keeps energy consumption low while the compact footprint suits space-constrained engine rooms. Capacities span from 32 to 600 m³/h, and all units — skid or otherwise — are connectivity-ready for remote monitoring and service support.

Market Position

Alfa Laval frames the launch as building on strong uptake of PureBallast 3 Ultra since deliveries began, plus decades of experience from more than 10,000 PureBallast systems ordered worldwide. The company notes that it continues investing in ballast water treatment even as some competitors have pulled back from the segment.

It’s also a reminder for surveyors and superintendents that ballast water system verification doesn’t end at commissioning. Whether a system is installed as discrete components or as a single skid, ongoing condition surveys and functional testing remain essential to confirm the treatment unit performs to its type-approval standard over years of service, particularly in challenging low-clarity or brackish water conditions where UV and filtration systems can be pushed harder. Owners bringing new or retrofitted vessels into service with any ballast water management system — skid-mounted or otherwise — should ensure their commissioning and acceptance surveys specifically verify treatment performance data alongside the paperwork, rather than relying solely on manufacturer factory testing claims.

As ballast water regulations continue to tighten globally, the push toward standardized, factory-tested modules like this one may become more common across other onboard systems too, shifting more quality assurance work to the manufacturing stage — which in turn raises the importance of independent verification once equipment reaches the vessel.
